Our History

In 1988, Kevin Smyth, an entrepreneur and human resources professional, had the idea to publish a free magazine for registered nurses. Kevin and a small group of investors formed Morningstar Publishing, Inc., and he became the founding publisher of Nursing Spectrum, a biweekly publication for RNs in the Chicago area. Nursing Spectrum experienced immediate success during the height of the nursing shortage in the late 1980s. The magazine's colorful, simple format and articles written by local RNs appealed to nurses. The combination of "faces and places you know," and the most local RN employment listings, along with outstanding "news you can use," fueled the magazine's growth. Nursing Spectrum's success in Chicago was replicated almost yearly with subsequent magazine launches in New York/New Jersey, Washington, DC/Baltimore, Florida, and Philadelphia.

In May 1994, Gannett acquired Morningstar Publishing and Nursing Spectrum became a part of Gannett Satellite Information Network, Inc. Now with the resources of a Fortune 500 Company, Nursing Spectrum continued to grow with the launch of a New England edition and one of the first web sites for RNs - NursingSpectrum.com.

In February 2004, Gannett acquired the NurseWeek brand from Jobson Publishing. NurseWeek was founded in 1979 by Dennis and Cle Riordan as a provider of continuing education for RNs. Their mission: "to improve patient care through nursing education". In 1986 their education catalog had evolved into a magazine serving California's registered nurses. By 2003 NurseWeek offered an array of continuing education products, magazines, web sites, career fairs and other services for RNs spanning 28 states (primarily west of the Mississippi River).

The union of Nursing Spectrum and NurseWeek brought together two of the most respected brands in healthcare trade publishing, along with two very talented groups of people. After a period of integration, the company's name was changed from Nursing Spectrum to Gannett Healthcare Group in order to create an umbrella under which new allied health brands such as Today in PT could be launched.
